January 04, 2005 - 7:16 p.m. Learn to be happy where you are. A most profound question you asked me: be happy where you are or be where you are happy? The grown ups (the real ones) tend to tell us that we should go out there and seek our fortunes. We should follow our dreams to the land of Where We Are Happy. But, if/when we fail to find that magical place, when the rain pours down on us as we sit in the mud waiting for..something..they tell us to make our own weather and be happy here. Theoretically, we can't lose. If we will ourselves to be Happy Where We Are, then suddenly we find that We Are Where We Are Happy. When we are sad--and sometimes we are sad--there is no excuse. When we are sad, it must mean that we have failed because we are not in one of the happy places to which we belong. Am I happy where I am? Yes. Do I know where to go to be happy? Yes. Why, then, is this a problem? If you can figure that one out, explain it to me. ...before & after...
