January 12, 2006 - 7:18 p.m. As I keep learning, I keep realizing that everything in interconnected. For instance, today in Kinetics we discussed a mechanism regarding the reaction that I read about in a T.S. Eliot essay in Literary Criticism last semester. And my Honors professor, talking about how the Greek logos can mean word, idea, reason, etc., said, "Read Derrida. He'd have fun with this one." I muttered to myself that Derrida (20th Century French literary theorist famous as a "deconstructionist") would indeed have a lot to say about the ambiguity of logos, and my professor was somewhat astonished that I'd read Derrida. Part of me just likes being impressive for my literary exposure. But the other part realizes that it's nice to understand allusions, jokes, etc. There's a vague practical value to all this knowledge. I'm not saying that all knowledge is really just the same thing or any such post-modern relativistic comment. I just find it really fascinating that all of my education is interconnected so closely. |
